R&D Conclave II of Petroleum Industry

9th to 11th January, 2008

“R&D Conclave II of Petroleum Industry” was organized by PETROTECH Society in collaboration with IOCL R&D and held at Hotel Cidade de Goa, Goa from 9th-11th January 2008. 

The conclave was attended by 110 participants, who were drawn from various R&D Centres both in the public, private sector and Practicing Managers from the upstream/downstream of the oil industry. During the two and a half days conclave various topics were covered by 25 eminent Speakers and 8 Chairpersons and 5 VVIPs, who addressed the delegates in the inaugural and valedictory sessions.

Mr J L Raina, Secretary General & CEO welcomed the delegates to the Conclave and assured PETROTECH untiring efforts to encourage R&D as well as to be an agent in enhancing its effectiveness in the Hydrocarbon Sector.  To catalyze this, PETROTECH has instituted 5 Research Scholarships per year for research in the Hydrocarbon Sector.

Mr Anand Kumar, Director (R&D), IOCL gave an overview of the R&D efforts of IOCL and many other organizations and stressed the need for research for the common cause of the hydrocarbon sector.  He indicated that research should be such, which is implementable and be benefited in chalking out new procedures/processes and reduces overhead costs.

Mr B M Bansal, Director (Business Development & Planning), IOCL; Mr K K Acharya, Managing Director, CPCL alongwith Mr M K Joshi, Director (Tech), EIL delivered the Keynote Addresses.  All of them stressed upon the need to encourage research and bring together partnerships between technical institutes and the industry.  They indicated that it was necessary for the industry to figure out what is required and for the academia to complete the research and revert it back to the industry for implementation.

Mr M B Lal, Chairman, Scientific Advisory Committee, Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas delivered the Inaugural Address.

The technical proceedings of the conclave covered two days deliberations with 8 technical sessions.  Topics covered were Global R&D Trends, National R&D Scenario-Upstream & Downstream, Development and Commercialization of Technology, R&D Advances in Frontier Areas, Lubricants and Fuels of the Future, Catalysis and Future Fuels and Petrochemicals and polymers.  Eminent faculty was brought in for covering all the topics.  The contents of the each session were very much appreciated by the participants.

A Special Address was given by Swami Sukhabodhananda, Chairman of Prasanna Trust, who spoke on “Nurturing Innovations in Oneself, Organization and Society”.  This two hours address to the participants was mind blowing, tantalizing and kept the participants glued attentively throughout the session.

The Valedictory Address was delivered by Mr Subir Raha, Executive Vice Chairman, Hinduja Group India.  While addressing the need for research & development in the industry, he wanted the ownership to be that of the top brass of each organizations.  Meaningful R&D which can be commercialized was the need of hour.  He spelt out 7 points to guide each organization in this direction:

  1. What Oil & Gas Industry is doing in R&D to mitigate exploration, viewed from the point of view of Geology/Geochemical.
  2. Production Risk, deep water Drilling & Production Risk Multiply, Develop Indian capability
  3. i. Cost of crude is – 93%-94% of refining cost coupled with Euro IV    norms; can we increase project viability/profitability.
    ii.
    What is R&D’s perspective to EURO-IV norms keeping in view products profitability?
    iii.
    Gas:
    Criminal Waste of Natural Resource (Gas) on the East Coast
    1. Fuel Use one time
    2. Futuristic use, Recycling Infinite         
  4. Use of Adjastances:
    Fossil Fuels, Oil, Gas from Coal to integrate the R&D Efforts in all fields for common source of energy.
  1. Environment
    1. Destruction of Environment
      Laws & Regulations in India are upto date but huge gap in their implementation
    2. Oil & Gas – Tremendous Responsibility
                  Refining – 150 MMT
                  Drilling/Production – 10-18 MMT
  1. Molecular form so as to create maximum value fuels indigenously
  2. Future: Digital Technology keeping in view market needs.
